Born Danijel Nestorović, his Serbian parents moved to Canada short of his fourth birthday in 1976 and settled in Toronto, where he attended Earl Haig Secondary School for a special sports program known as APGA (Academic Program for Gifted Athletes).

He was a member of the Canadian Davis Cup team from 1992 to 2018. He first came to prominence in the public eye that year by defeating then world number one Stefan Edberg in a hard-fought singles match in Vancouver.
