Runde has been a long-standing member of the board of directors for the Society for International Development-Washington (SIDW) and served as its president between 2011 and 2012. He also served as chair of the July 2011 SID World Congress in Washington, DC. Runde is also a life member of the Council of Foreign Relations.

Runde was appointed to the USAID in 2002 under the Bush Administration in the beginning phases of the Global Development Alliance initiative. From 2005 until 2007 he served as the head of the Office of Global Development Alliances (GDA) as director. In the USAID, USAID in charge, he steered his team in the GDA partnership initiative, which provided the necessary training, networks, personnel as well as funds and guidance to create and consolidate alliances.
