Schwartz is born the 28th of July 1950, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Francine (nee Abrahams) and Jim Schwartz. He was the son of a Rabbi while his father was a former Holiday Inn manager. He has a twin brother named Stephen as well as a sister named Marian. Schwartz was a student at Oak Park and River High School where he was a member of the “top 20” of his 800-member class, and was the the class president for his senior year. Schwartz was a student at Princeton University and graduated with an academic diploma of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. In his senior semester, Schwartz studied at the Institutes of Etudes politiques situated in Paris, France, where He was awarded the Certificat of Etudes Politiques.

Schwartz began his career in finance by completing private placements for First City National Bank of Houston in 1978. The bank, later renamed First City Bancorporation of Texas, Inc. was the largest bank in Texas in the 1970s. He joined the bank in 1982. worked in corporate finance for Keefe, Bruyette & Woods in New York, New York before transferring to work at Daiwa Capital Markets, where he was the head of the department of mergers and acquisitions and was part of the team who wrote the initial Euroyen bonds for an international company that was a subsidiary of Sears. Then, he was a part of Becker Paribas Inc., which was part of the team that created the Paribas Merchant Banking Group in 1985.

In addition to publishing the Asian Venture Capital Journal (1993-2008), Schwartz also published Policy Today (2004-2008).

In 1993, Schwartz purchased the Asian Venture Capital Journal (AVCJ) in Hong Kong. AVCJ became a leading source of information on Asian private equity and venture capital, and its AVCJ Forum became the top private equity and venture capital event in Asia. AVCJ also became the first company to distribute the digital edition of a print publication in 1998. The company was purchased by British publishing company Incisive Media in 2006. AVCJ was subsequently sold to BC Partners-owned Mergermarket Group in 2015. Schwartz relinquished his title of Chairman Emeritus of AVCJ in 2008.
