This time frame marks a significant stage in the evolution of Dai’s musical style. Dai experiments using spatial segregation, a method which breaks down the traditional seating arrangement of the orchestra, often placing them in the auditorium to create dramatic and aural effects. The first orchestral work that utilized the technique is Calling Timbuktu (2nd prize Takemitsu Competition 2003) was played by Tokyo Philharmonic and BBC Symphony Orchestras. Additionally, he begins to experiment with video writing moromoro and teki for solo piano as well as film. Studies into spatial separation and cinematographic musical patterns continued during his time at King’s College London under George Benjamin which led to an PhD.

October 2005, Eötvös conducted the world premiere of “Vast Ocean” for trombone, orchestra and live electronics.
