She holds the second dan in Taekwondo and is a martial arts instructor. Erik, her child Erik has been a Taekwondo master.
In the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Kersten won two medals. She won medals in both the individual and team competitions followed by a silver on the bars in front of Romanian Daniela Silivas. She also placed seventh in vault competition, and 8th in all-around.

In 1985, at the World Championships in Montreal, she took home bronze medals in the team competition, and an award of bronze in the all- around competition, which was won by co-winners Oksana Omelianchik, and Elena Shushunova of the Soviet Union. She also reached the four finals for apparatus with silver on bars, which was a step behind GDR colleague Gabriele Fahnrich. She also won winning bronze in vault. She placed sixth on the floor, as well as eighth in beam.
