He played his college football during his time at South Carolina and was drafted by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. On the 17th of August 2013 Swearinger struck Miami Dolphins’ tight end Dustin Keller’s right knee. The impact resulted in damaging his MCL, ACL PCL, and ACL, as well as dislocating the knee. Johnson, Justice Cunningham, DeVonte Holloman, Akeem Auguste, and ten other prospects. Team representatives and scouts from 31 NFL teams attended as Swearinger opted to run his 40-yard dash (4.65) , 20-yard dash (2.68), and 10-yard dash (1.52) again, while also performing positional drills. He was ranked the fourth best free safety prospect in the draft by NFLDraftScout.com, the fourth best safety by NFL analyst Mike Mayock, and was ranked the fifth best safety prospect by Sports Illustrated.
He was a professional in the regular-season debut in the Houston Texans’ season-opener against the San Diego Chargers and recorded two solo tackles during their 31-28 win. On the 13th of October in 2013 Swearinger scored two single tackles, and the Texans start safety Danieal Manning was injured by hairline fractures of the right fibula an 11-28 loss to the St. Louis Rams. The next season, Swearinger earned his first career start, replacing Manning and had five solo tackles in an 18-17 loss against the Kansas City Chiefs. In the Week 10 game with the Arizona Cardinals, he recorded three tackles combined, deflected two passes and threw an interception for the first time in his professional career on a failed pass attempt from Carson Palmer during the Texans 24 – 27 loss. Swearinger was awarded an athletic scholarship to study at his home University of South Carolina, where he was a player for Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina Gamecocks football team from 2009 until 2012.
