Cynthia Lee Woodhead (born February 7th 1964) popularly referred to by her family name “Sippy”, is an American former competitive swimmer World champion Olympic medalist and the former world record holder. She was awarded three gold medals in the 1978 World Championships, when she was just 14 years old. She established seven world records in her swimming career.

She broke the long-course 50-meter world freestyle record the 10th of April,

  1. However, the record was enhanced through Jill Sterkel the same day. Also, she broke the long-course 200-meter freestyle record three times, between 1978 and 1979. Her record was held as the world record until the year 1984. She was also a part of the U.S. team that held the world 4×100-meter freestyle relay record from 1978 until 1980.

In late 1981 and 1982, she suffered from several health problems—mononucleosis, a broken leg, and pneumonia.

Woodhead competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where she received a silver medal in 200-meter freestyle, finishing behind compatriot Mary Wayte.

In 1979, at the Pan American Games in San Juan, Puerto Rico, she won five gold medals. She took home the 100200, 200 freestyle and the 400-meter and was among the winners of U.S. teams in the 4×100-meter freestyle and 4×100 meter Medley relays.
