Cynthia Kenyon is one of the most popular and richest Biologist who was born on February 21, 1954 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Cynthia Jane Kenyon (February 21 1954) is an American biogerontologist and molecular biologist recognized for her genetic analysis of the aging process in a widely utilized model organism called the roundworm Caenorhabditis the elegans. She is also a Professor in the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

In 2000, after she found out that adding sugar on food of the worms shortened their lives and she was forced to stop eating foods with high glycemic index and began low-carbohydrate meals.

In April 2014, Kenyon was named Vice President of Aging Research at Calico, a new company focused on health, well-being, and longevity. Prior to that, she served as a part-time advisor beginning in November 2013. Kenyon will remain affiliated with UCSF as an emeritus professor.

Michael Klass discovered that lifespan of C. Elegans may be affected by mutations however Klass believes that this change was due to decreased consumption of food (caloric limitation). Thomas Johnson later showed that the 65% increase in life effect resulted from the mutation, and not caused by caloric restriction. In 1993, Kenyon’s finding that a single gene change (Daf-2) could extend the life span of C. C. elegans, and that this could be reversed through another mutation in daf-16m, led to an extensive study of molecular biology of aging including research done by Leonard Guarente and David Sinclair. Kenyon’s findings have led to the discovery that an evolutionarily-conserved hormone signaling system influences aging in other organisms, perhaps also including mammals.

Cynthia Kenyon graduated valedictorian in biochemistry and chemistry at The University of Georgia in 1976. She earned her Ph.D. in 1981 from MIT where, within Graham Walker’s lab she examined genes based on their activity profiles. She found that DNA-damaging agents trigger a series of repair genes for DNA in E. coli. Then, she did postdoctoral research in collaboration with Nobel laureate Sydney Brenner at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England, studying the evolution of C. E. elegans.

Since 1986, she has been in University of California, San Francisco. University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in which she is an Herbert Boyer Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics and is currently an American Cancer Society Professor. In 1999, she founded Elixir Pharmaceuticals with Leonard Guarente to research and develop medications that slow the process which causes people to age.

Kenyon has received many honors, including the King Faisal Prize for Medicine, the Association of American Medical Colleges Award for Distinguished Research, the Ilse & Helmut Wachter Award for Exceptional Scientific Achievement, and La Fondation IPSEN Prize, for her findings. She is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She was President of the Genetics Society of America for 2003. She is also one of featured biologists in the 1995 science documentary Death by Design / The Life and Times of Life and Times.

How does the DAF 2 gene work?

Mutations in daf-2, encoding an insulin receptor-like protein , or age-1, encoding the catalytic subunit of PI3K, increase adult longevity and stress resistance and can cause constitutive developmental arrest as dauer larvae, an alternative third stage larval form that is optimized for long-term survival under harsh …
