McDonald quit the club towards the end of the 2009-10 campaign and tried out in the Football League sides, Stockport County and Leyton Orient, however he didn’t sign an agreement and was subsequently re-signed by Forest Green. The birthplace of Curtis was Cardiff, Curtis made his debut for Cardiff City on 30 April 2006 in the match against Coventry City in the Football League Championship. On November 24 the club joined Accrington Stanley on loan and made an appearance in the 2-0 loss at Doncaster Rovers in the Football League Trophy as an substitute for Andy Todd. He was then back with the Bluebirds and came from the bench to score two goals and the winner during the day of his Cardiff City debut, away against Carmarthen Town in the FAW Premier Cup however, at the conclusion of the 2006-07 campaign, he was dismissed by Cardiff.

He later went back in Britain after signing a 6 month contract with Forest Green Rovers, linking with his the former Cardiff teammates Stuart Fleetwood. He then signed on for the season following when he was another contract was offered to remain.

On 28 December 2010, he signed for fellow Conference National side Newport County. His spell with Newport was disappointing however and in March 2011 McDonald re-signed for Forest Green on loan. This move was made permanent on 31 May 2011 when he signed a one-year contract with the Nailsworth club.
