Cruz Miguel Bustamante (born January 4 1953) is a well-known American politician from the United States. Bustamante was Lieutenant Governor for the state of California from 1999 until 2007 and was in the governorships of Gray Davis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. An active part of the Democratic Party, Bustamante previously was Speaker of the State Assembly between 1996 and 1998.

Bustamante was a candidate against Republican Steve Poizner in November. Bustamante made it clear that he will not accept the contributions from insurance companies towards his political campaign which was which was widely criticized by Poizner as well as campaign ethicists. Bustamante did not finish the process of submitting an election announcement to the voters. Based on the Field Poll, on November 3 of the 3rd of November, 2006 Bustamante lost to Poizner by 9 percent. And lost to Poizner by 12percent at the General Election.

Bustamante was speculated to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in California’s 21st congressional district in 2012, but ultimately did not run.

It was his most well-known Democrat to contest the California recall elections to eliminate the governor Gray Davis, and placed in second place behind Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger, with around 2.7 million voters, 31.5 percentage of all votes cast (see complete results).

The eldest of six kids, Cruz Bustamante was born in Dinuba, California. His family later relocated into San Joaquin, California. He was a graduate of Tranquillity High School in the 1970s. He excelled at football as well as wrestling. He later went to Fresno City College and California State University, Fresno.

As an occupant from Fresno, Bustamante was elected to the California State Assembly in a special election in 1993 and then became the speaker of the Assembly in the year 1996. Then, in 1998, the Lieutenant Governor was chosen. Bustamante easily won the June 6, 2006 Democratic primary, receiving 70.5% of the vote and defeating his challenger, John Kraft. In the June Primary Bustamante received 1,606,913 Democratic votes, Kraft 674,309 Democratic votes, and Poizner 1,472,729 Republican votes. Many political analysts believed that Kraft, who ran a low-key campaign where he took no campaign contributions, received those votes as a protest for Bustamante’s behavior during the 2003 recall election. However, Kraft planned to actively campaign for Bustamante, and donated a significant portion of his fortune as an heir to Kraft Foods to Bustamante.
