Road (born May 26 1982) is a Cuban- American artist graphic novelist, graphic artist and punk rock artist who’s posters, music and autobiographical work explore issues of queer culture, feminism as well as social justice. She is primarily an graphic novelist and illustrator, however, she is also well-known for her long-running magazine about punk music as well as her life as an queer Latina. She’s appeared at the Sister Spit roadshow in 2007 in 2009, 2007, and 2013 and was the lead singer and guitarist of queercore/pop punk group, The Homewreckers. She sings in the band and is a guitarist in the band Choked Up.

From 2008 until 2017 Road was a guitarist and sang in the queercore pop punk Brooklyn group The Homewreckers. The group has since split together and played one last concert on February 18, 2017 at a benefit concert to support The Audre Lorde Project. Road is currently singing as a vocalist and plays guitar with the pop-punk group Choked Up.

In 2017, Road has raised more than $30k to finance her long-term dream project, Next World Tarot. Completely hand-drawn, this tarot deck is a colorful depiction of the queer and POC individuals living in the post- apocalyptic world. The deck was created by Road also completed the master’s diploma in illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, where she specialized her thesis on the development of tarot in its history.

Road said in Visual Resistance magazine that she began creating zines around 14 years old, stating that “I think integrating political ideas into my drawings was just a natural progression, cause I’ve thought of art as my primary craft since puberty. Whatever affects my life is usually what’s represented in my art.” Between 1997 and around 2004 she released the zines Greenzine that began as a fanzine focusing on the Green Day band. So, I was really motivated to create something that was a hybrid of that and epic painting like Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Kathe Kollowitz and really classic illustration.” Road talked about the impact that her quer-queer as well as Latino-American identity in her work and politics on the Autostraddle on the website Autostraddle in 2013. She said, “It was difficult to find other gay people who felt completely discomfited and had no interest in assimilating towards mainstream/straight culture. And although punk was heavily straight– it also paraded around ‘outcast’ culture; and my discovery of punk included the discovery of a hugely queer punk scene in San Francisco/Oakland, CA. So basically, this inability to be out and this desire to exist somewhere outside of what I knew additionally sparked my interest in raising political and social awareness around gender and sexuality.” Road has released three books, and one set of postcards along with various posters for concerts and books, protest flyers and logos.

Bitch magazine named Road as an “Bitchlist” pick in 2005 and wrote that she had created artwork that is socially conscious using “love, color, and punk rock grit.” Bluestockings Books articulated Road’s style and influence in their critique of Indestructable, “Cristy’s rad illustrations and incisive writing give voice to this true story about gender identity, cultural roots, mortality, and punk rock.” Curve wrote about Indestructable: “So powerful is Road’s candid portrayal of growing pains, it provides the perfect comfort for angsty, self-loathing youth and sends older readers back down memory lane through their own adventures and mishaps of young adulthood.” Road’s book “Bad Habits” was nominated for the LAMBDA Literary Award. A poster she designed was included within the Justseeds collection, Celebrate People’s History A Poster Book about Revolution and Resistance. In 2012, the website Flavorwire identified Road one of the 50 “up and coming New York culture makers to watch in 2013,” The website described her as “a fixture in feminist, LGBT, and punk zinester circles.”
