Cristian Popescu Piedone (born on February 15th 1963) is a Romanian politician who was serving as Bucharest’s Mayor Sector 4 from 2008 until the 4th of November of 2015, after which he resigned in the wake of the Colectiv nightclub’s fire and the after-effects of the 2014 Romanian protests.

The name he has assumed, Piedone (Italian for “big foot”) is derived of his Spaghetti Western character by that name played with Bud Spencer. The year 2006 was the time that Popescu legally changed his surname to Piedone.

The Conservative Party’s candidate for mayor in the 2008 local election in Sector 4, Popescu Piedone won the elections against PD-L’s Radu Silaghi.

Popescu Piedone was reelected in the June 2012 elections, gaining 80.36% of the votes in Sector 4.

Prior to the Romanian Revolution, Cristian Popescu was head waiter at the seaside restaurant. He launched his own restaurant called Restaurantul Ciocarlia (“Nightingale Restaurant”) on the Dambovita River quay in Bucharest. Popescu was a member of his party the Party of Social Democracy in Romania in 1994 when the youth section of the party began to gather at the restaurant.

He started his studies at the Dimitre Gusti High School in Bucharest in 1991 aged 28 and He graduated just four years later. Later, he pursued study in Petrosani University. University of Petrosani, which finished in 2002.

In 2007, obtained his driving license in Pitești, Argeș County after temporarily moving his domicile to Priboieni. Journalists noted that moving his domicile without resigning from his function as member of the local council is illegal. Additionally, while a resident in Priboieni, he registered a Cadillac in Bucharest, for which he was criminally prosecuted.
