In 1986 the year 1986, he was approached with an offer from New York real estate developers Tony Goldman and Mark Soyka who wanted to make improvements to the famous, but dingy Park Central Hotel on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach. Robins represented his father in the meeting, which turned into a discussion on the need to renovate South Beach. (Robins says the fact that Goldman is “the second big influence on my career, after my father.”) The year 1987 saw Robins independently he founded Dacra Development, Inc. and began to buy as well as develop South Beach real estate. He also founded Dacra Construction and his brother Scott also ventured into real estate by forming the company of his own, Scott Robins Companies, Inc. which was joined by Craig’s business. Robins helped negotiate a deal between preservationists and developers on the expansion of the Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District which established his status as an advocate for preservation. In the beginning of his profession, Robins had the opportunity to be mentored by business partner at the time, Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records. Together they renovated a range of properties located on South Beach which were repositioned as Island Outpost hotels. The properties they renovated comprised the Netherland as well as the Leslie and the Kent and the Cavalier and the Marlin that was widely acknowledged as the catalyst for the revival of the area. The year 1992 was when they bought together with their father $8.5 millions the Cavalier and the Cardozo as well as the Carlyle as well as the Leslie along with the Victor hotels from the debtors from the developer Leonard Pelullo. Robins’s next significant mentor was the real property development entrepreneur Tony Goldman, who was mostly credited with the revival of the city’s Soho. It was 1997 when Robins purchased Chalk’s Airlines and rebranded it Pan Am Air Bridge; He sold it in 1998. The year 1999 saw Dacra bought 8.5 acres located on the southern portion of Allison Island and created AQUA which is an New Urbanist community featuring modern design, architecture and site-specific art. It has the masterplan of Duany Plater-Zyberk , and public art projects , including the 100-foot-long mural of Richard Tuttle. The community is now a global model of development. In the following years, Robins focused on reviving Miami’s Design District. It was in 2005 that Robins created the very inaugural Design Miami collectible design fair in the Design District alongside Art Basel. A worldwide event for design, every fair brings together prominent collectors, gallerists and designers, curators , and critics to celebrate the design world and commerce. It is held in conjunction with those of the Art Basel fairs in Miami, USA each December and Basel, Switzerland each June, Design Miami/ has become the leading place to exhibit, collect and discussing designs that are collectible. Its Miami Design District is now growing into a luxury shopping mall with offerings that include Louis Vuitton, Hermes, and Cartier. Since 2012 the district became the sole project within Miami Dade county to receive the LEED Gold Neighborhood Development certification.
