Craig Mello Biography

Craig Mello is one of the most popular and richest Biologist who was born on October 18, 1960 in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. Mello was born in New Haven, Connecticut on October 18th in 1960. He was the son of the third generation of James Mello and Sally Mello. The father of James Mello, James Mello, was paleontologist, and Sally Mello was his mom. Sally Mello, was an artist. His grandparents came from the Azores to the US from Azores, the Portuguese island of Azores. His parents met at Brown University and were the first members of their respective families to go to college. His grandparents from both sides of the family resigned from the school at a young age to take on jobs for their families. James Mello completed his Ph.D. in paleontology at Yale University in 1962. The Mello family relocated from the city of Falls Church in northern Virginia in order that James could be able to work within the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in Washington, DC. James was raised as a Roman Catholic.

The regular Howard Hughes Medical Institute Scientific Meeting that was held on the 13th of November of 2006 at Ashburn, Virginia, Dr. Mello recounted the phone message he received that informed him that the prize was his. He remembers it was around 4 o’clock and he’d completed looking after his daughter returning to his bedroom. The phone came in (or more accurately, that green light flashed) as his wife instructed that he should not answer since it was a joke phone call. After questioning his wife on the phone, she explained that the phone had rang even though he was away from the room. Someone was playing a joke by telling them that he won the Nobel prize. When he explained to his wife that they would making announcements about that they were the Nobel prize winners this day, he told her that “her jaw dropped.” He called the number, and the person at the other end advised him to dress and in less than 30 minutes his life was set to change.

Mello is involved in several RNAi-based biotechnology companies. He is a co- founder of RXi Pharmaceuticals where he Chairs the Scientific Advisory Board. Recently he joined the Technology Advisory Board of Beeologics, a company focused on development of RNAi products for honeybee health and various veterinary and agricultural applications, which, according to Mello, “could very well be the first company to obtain FDA approval for an RNAi therapy”. In September 2011 Monsanto acquired Beeologics.

In his October 2015 acceptance speech for a China Friendship Award from Premier Li Keqiang Mello said,

Mello studied at his studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder to pursue graduate studies in molecular developmental and cellular biology with David Hirsh. When David Hirsh took a decision to pursue an industrial job, Mello moved to Harvard University to continue his studies with Dan Stinchcomb. Mello finished the requirements for his Ph.D. in the department of Harvard in the year 1990. The doctor was also a postdoctoral associate within the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center within the lab under the Dr. James Priess.

Mello was a student at Fairfax High School (Fairfax, Virginia). After earning his High School diploma Mello was accepted into Brown University as molecular and biochemistry major. Kenneth Miller, his cell biology teacher, reminisced about how even though he did not get his “best grades of the class,” the student was extremely interested and was was a “real pain in the ass.” Mello was never one to let Miller end an entire lecture without asking for sources, questions or examples of ideas that were discussed during the lecture. Miller earned his Sc.B. from Brown in 1982.

In 2006, Mello and Fire received the Nobel Prize for work that began in 1998, when Mello and Fire along with their colleagues (SiQun Xu, Mary Montgomery, Stephen Kostas, and Sam Driver) published a paper in the journal Nature detailing how tiny snippets of RNA fool the cell into destroying the gene’s messenger RNA (mRNA) before it can produce a protein – effectively shutting specific genes down.
