1986 was a year of more trouble for the boy Levein when he sustained an injury to his knee that was serious during an off-season game with Hibernian. The injury would alter his life forever. There was a recurrence his injury back in the year 1988 after he fell unconscious in the game against Rangers and was forced to spend a second year without playing.

After being forced into retirement as a player, Levein had coaching positions at Hearts and at Livingston. In November 1997 he was appointed as manager of Cowdenbeath and turned a struggling team into one that could challenge for promotion. Cowdenbeath were promoted in 2001, but Levein had left in December 2000 to take over as manager at Hearts.

Levein was forced to retire from playing in 1997, due to another serious knee injury. He made 401 appearances for Hearts.

In 1983, Levein moved in 1983 to Heart of Midlothian for a cost of PS40,000. Soon, he was a regular player in the team’s first. Levein received his SPFA Young Player of the award between 1985 and 1986 as one of the few players to hold the award. In the final season, Hearts pursued an unbeaten league and cup double. Two goals in the final 30 minutes of their season played by Albert Kidd gave Hearts their first defeat in league play in their 31-game campaign, and brought the league trophy to Celtic. Levein did not play in that game due to illness. Levein returned to the Hearts team next week, but was not able to play in 1986’s Scottish Cup Final, which Hearts were defeated 3-0 by Aberdeen.

Craig William Levein (born 22 October 1964) is a Scottish professional footballer and coach. In his time as a player, Levein played with Cowdenbeath along with Heart of Midlothian, making over 300 league appearances with the Edinburgh club before being forced to quit due to an injury. He also earned 16 cap for Scotland and was a part of the 1990 FIFA World Cup squad.

Levein was born in Dunfermline and was a student at Inverkeithing High School, where he played for the team with another potential Scottish international player, Gordon Durie. He was a fan for Raith Rovers. His first football season included playing in support of Dalgety Bay, Leven Royals and Inverkeithing under-16s. At the age of 15 but he resigned from football for a period of a year, but returned after his brother who was a player for the youth club Lochore Welfare invited him to the club’s training facilities. Levein later signed with Lochore and, after a few trials at several clubs of the senior level, eventually signed with Cowdenbeath around 1981. He soon acclimatized to the first team and was a target for bigger clubs.

He made his Scotland debut in March 1990, a 1–0 win against reigning world champions, Argentina, at Hampden Park and played well enough to earn a place in Scotland’s 1990 World Cup squad. Levein won 16 caps for the Scotland national team.

On 23 December 2009, Levein left Dundee United to become the new Scotland manager. He agreed to a ​5 ⁄2 -year deal. Scotland won 1–0 in his first match in charge, a friendly against the Czech Republic, with the goal coming from Celtic captain Scott Brown. However, his second game in charge would not be as successful, with Scotland going down 3–0 to Sweden on 12 August 2010. This was also followed by a disappointing 0–0 draw with Lithuania and an unconvincing 2–1 victory over Liechtenstein in the first two Euro 2012 qualifying matches.
