Spouse Richard Axel

Cornelia Bargmann is one of the most popular and richest Neurobiologist who was born on January 1, 1961 in Virginia, United States. She graduated from University of Georgia. University of Georgia in 1981 and graduated with a degree in biochemistry. When she was at UGA she developed her laboratory experience through Wyatt Anderson’s biology lab. She then joined Sidney Kushner’s genetics laboratory. She graduated from MIT with an Ph.D within the Department of Biology in 1987. She was in the laboratory that was headed by Robert Weinberg. She studied the molecular mechanisms that govern oncogenesis, and also helped to determine the role played by Ras for bladder cancer. Her thesis was on neu, which is a non-Ras oncogene. While the significance of her research was not widely accepted in the early days, her research ultimately resulted in significant treatment for breast cancer.

She continued her research into the behavior of worms and their neural control, with a particular focus on Olfaction on a molecular level. She sought out genes that are like those identified in Richard Axel and Linda Buck to be the underlying cause of the sense of smell and taste. She discovered those genes in the genome sequenced recently from C elegans. Her research led to the discovery of the mechanisms behind complex behaviors, including eating behaviors. The research continues to help develop a greater understanding of the brain, its sensory capabilities, and neuronal development. Bargmann also discovered SYG-1, an “matchmaker” molecule–a molecule that allows neurons to establish connections between them during the development.

Bargmann was co-chair of BRAIN initiative. She is the head of Science for the Chan Zuckerberg initiative. She was awarded the Breakthrough prize in Life Sciences in 2013.

Bargmann was offered a faculty appointment in UCSF within the Department of Anatomy in 1995. She was promoted from assistant Professor to Prof. in the year 1998 and was Vice Chair of the Department for a period of 1999-2000. In UCSF she began her own lab along with collaborator Marc Tessier-Lavigne.

She was in 2004, when Bargmann made the move in 2004 to Rockefeller University. She claims that the main reason for her decision was because she was looking for more flexibility in order to pursue research. She was an Investigator at Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 2016 to 2016. Howard Hughes Medical Institute until 2016 when she was appointed the position of President of CZI. Bargmann’s lab employs a basic organism called known as the nematode C. C. elegans and its highly sensitized sense of smell to investigate the role of genes in neuronal development as well as function and behavior. Her research has been acknowledged by numerous awards, including the election of the National Academy of Sciences.

Cornelia Isabella “Cori” Bargmann (born 1961) is an American neurobiologist. She is known for her work on the genetic and neural circuit mechanisms of behavior using C. elegans, particularly the mechanisms of olfaction in the worm. She has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and had been a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at UCSF and then Rockefeller University from 1995 to 2016. It was announced on September 21, 2016 that she had been named the incoming president of science at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, effective October 1, 2016. In 2012 she was awarded the $1 million Kavli Prize, and in 2013 the $3 million Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences.
