After an agreement to loan for FC Girondins de Bordeaux, Martins returned to Strasbourg until 2004 when he ended the rest of his playing career at Clermont Foot.
During 2011–12 and 2012–13, Martins acted as caretaker for Brest as a replacement for sacked Alex Dupont and Landry Chauvin, respectively. After managing to avert top flight relegation in the former season, he lost all eight matches he was in charge in the latter, with the subsequent 20th position in the table and relegation.
On 8 October 2014, Martins was appointed manager of Mauritania. In January 2019, he extended his contract until 2021.
On the 30th of May, 1996, Martins joined Deportivo de La Coruna from Spain. After a successful debut campaign in La Liga Martins lost his position in the squad due to injuries. He returned to France to join RC Strasbourg for one and one-half years. He won this year’s Coupe de France after defeating Amiens SC on penalties.

Martins is a native of Brest, Brittany of Portuguese descent. After making his debut at the local club Stade Brestois 29, he was transferred into AJ Auxerre in 1991, becoming a vital part of an emerging team led by the legend Guy Roux; in 1992-93 they made it to their UEFA Cup semi-finals and, four years later, they achieved an historic double.
Martins made his debut for France on the 27th March 1993, when the team scored an 1-0 win over Austria. Martins was France’s representative during UEFA Euro 1996 and made 14 appearances. However, Martins’ international experience was severely affected by the arrival in the form of Zinedine Zidane.
Martins started his managerial career in 2006, with lowly Quimper Cornouaille FC. In the following year he was named his first club’s director of football, but had a brief spell as interim coach in the beginnings of the 2008–09 campaign; he subsequently stayed on the bench, now as an assistant for the Ligue 2 team.
