After breaking into the starting fifteen players, Cooney was positioned in midfield when Gort Community School faced Portumna Community School in the Connacht final on the 21st of March 2009. On 6 March 2010, Cooney lined out in a third successive Connacht final. He scored three points from full-forward but ended the game on the losing side after suffering a 1-13 to 2-09 defeat by Presentation College from Athenry.
On 20 August 2011, Cooney made his first appearance for the Galway under-21 team. He scored a point from right wing-forward in a 0-22 to 2-14 defeat of Limerick in the All-Ireland semi-final. He was switched to full-forward for the All-Ireland final against Dublin on 10 September 2011. Cooney was held scoreless but collected a winners’ medal following the 3-14 to 1-10 victory.
Cooney began his career with Galway at the age of 16 as a member of the minor squad during the 2009 All-Ireland Championship. Cooney made his debut with the team on the 25th of July 2009 when he was brought in as a substitute in midfield to replace James Regan and scored a point in a 423-to defeat to Antrim. On the 6th of September, 2009 Cooney was awarded the All-Ireland Championship medal for his non-playing substitute as Galway won against Kilkenny two-to-one in the championship final.
