Born in 1971, he was the son of one of English father (who was an RAF pilot during the Second World War, ) and an Irish mom (whose grandfather was seanchai). He attended Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Primary in Ruislip, Middlesex, then went to St Martins School in Northwood before going to Merchant Taylors School. Then he attended St Dominic’s Sixth Form College and then he pursued a degree in English in the University of London, and taught subjects for seven consecutive years before being the director of the English department at Haydon School, where one of his pupils were Fearne Cotton. He left teaching in order to compose his debut book, The Gates of Rome. He is married and has four kids and is a resident of Hertfordshire, England, near Chorleywood Golf Club.

After finishing the fourth novel in the Emperor series, Iggulden began research for the next book in his series called his Conqueror series, which is based on his experiences with Mongol Warlords Genghis, Ogedai and Kublai Khan. The first novel, Wolves of the Plains. It was released on 2nd of January 2007. Then, he released his second novel, Lord of the Bows which was released on January 2nd, 2008. Bones of the Hills, the third novel within the series came out on September 1, 2008. In September of 2010, Empire of Silver was released and focuses on The life and times of Genghis Khan’s son Ogedai. While Iggulden initially stated on his website that he was writing two books following Empire of Silver on Kublai Khan The note of the author at the conclusion of Conqueror declares that the book will be the last book in the series. Iggulden discusses his intention to end the character’s story with a lot to do instead of following the character to his final demise, like he did with Julius Caesar and Genghis Khan.

In 2010, there was media coverage toward a proposed epic film Emperor: Young Caesar to be about the early life of Julius Caesar covering the years from 92 BC to 71 BC and based on the first two novels of Iggulden’s Emperor series, The Gates of Rome and The Death of Kings. Exclusive Media Group hired Burr Steers to direct after they had an adaptation penned by William Broyles and Stephen Harrigan.

In 2012 Iggulden added a further quickreads book to the list Quantum of Tweed – The Man with a Nissan Micra – a comedy about an unwitting hitman.

Iggulden wrote a book in collaboration alongside his twin sister Hal, The Dangerous Book for Boys. It covers more than eighty subjects that range from making the soapbox racer, and tieing knots, to reading about famous battles, and how to create potassium aluminium Sulphate crystals. It was first published to the UK in June of 2006, and was it was reprinted in the following month and was named British Book of the Year at the Galaxy British Book Awards.
