Colette Urban is one of the most popular and richest Canadian artist who was born on January 29, 1952 in Denver, Colorado, United States. Constance “Colette” Joyce Urban was born in Denver, Colorado in 1952. Her family was from Michigan as well as North Carolina. When her mother saw the artistic potential of Urban, she enrolled Colette and her sister in classes within the museum of art situated in Charlotte, North Carolina. After obtaining the BFA in the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1980) her was able to obtain an MFA in Victoria University. University of Victoria (1982). She taught at various colleges across Canada.

A documentary on Her life as well as her work within Western Newfoundland, Pretend Not To See Me was made available in the year 2010. Film was edited by Katherine Knight and produced by Site Media.

Urban was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2012. In 2013, just prior to her death, she was awarded the Excellence in Visual Arts Long Haul Award from the VANL-CARFAC, Newfoundland and Labrador’s visual artists’ association, recognizing Urban’s contributions to visual arts in the province.

Before her death in June 2013, Urban was involved in planning a retrospective exhibition of her work to be held at Museum London. The exhibition, entitled “Incognito”, would ultimately open in October 2013.

In 2007, she moved in 2007 to Meadows within Newfoundland and set up The Full Tilt Creative Centre in the town nearby of McIvers. Following her death in 2013 McIvers, the city in McIvers, Newfoundland named a walking trail in her memory which is now called Colette Urban Memorial Trail. Constance “Colette” Joyce Urban (January 29th 1952 – 16 June 2013) was an artist from Canada and America who was well-known for her sculpture, performance art, and installation. Her work challenged social norms gender roles, gender roles, the relationship between the spectator and performer, aswell in the realm of consumer culture and everyday life with a humorous and humorous approach. Urban had been a tenured professor of Visual Arts at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada until 2006. She relocated to Bay of Islands, in Western Newfoundland and based herself in the towns that comprised Meadows as well as McIvers, Newfoundland to develop Full Tilt Creative Centre, an artist’s residency organic farm and exhibition space. Then, in November of 2012 following an extended period of unidentified discomfort, Urban was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. Urban passed away at her home in McIvers in the year 2013.

Urban’s has an extensive exhibition and performance record, including the following solo exhibitions: Pin Up at Grunt Gallery in 2011 featuring Urban’s calendar project Limited Possession; Recalling Belvedere produced by UK gallery Art Gene in 2004; This is not a hat at Museum Van Nagsael, Rotterdam, in 2003; and Gambler at Or Gallery Vancouver in 1986. Museum London held a retrospective exhibition and published a catalogue raisonné of Urban’s work, both titled “Incognito”, in October 2013.
