In 1992, Fusco developed the acclaimed work of art, Two Unexposed Indians Travel to in the West by collaborating with Guillermo G. Pena. The performance premiered on the Plaza Colon in Madrid and Covent Garden in London, later it was toured towards the Australian Museum in Sydney and the Museum of Natural History in New York City. The show was recorded in The documentary The Couple in the Cage which was written by Paula Heredia. The performances of Two Undiscovered Amerindians …, Fusco and Gomez-Pena were put on display inside a cage, as an satirical reference to the tradition of displaying human beings for entertainment. They claimed to be the natives of an unknown island located in the Gulf of Mexico, and were engaged in rituals and tasks that were explained through fake scientific information materials that were posted in the performance piece. Participants were invited to engage with them and pay to capture a picture or witness them dance. The performance was an attack on colonialism, and specifically the role played by institutions that conducted the research where it was performed as well as a response to the worldwide celebrations marking Christopher Columbus’s first voyage to the Americas.

Fusco has presented performances and videos in arts festivals worldwide, including the 56th Venice Biennale, two Whitney Biennials (2008, 1993), the Next Wave Festival at BAM, and Performa05. She is the recipient of the 2016 Greenfield Prize in Visual Art, a 2014 Cintas Fellowship, a 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship, a 2013 Absolut Art Writing Award, a 2012 US Artists Fellowship, and a 2003 Herb Alpert Award in the Arts, as well as grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, the NEA and NYFA.

Fusco has taught on the arts faculties of Temple University, Columbia University, Parsons School of Design, and MIT. In 2014 she received a Fulbright appointment and served as the Distinguished Chair in the Visual Arts at Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado in São Paulo, Brazil for one year. Fusco currently serves as the Andrew Banks Endowed Chair at the College of the Arts at University of Florida.

After graduating from the graduate program around 1985 Fusco began to meet a small group of Cuban artists such as Jose Bedia, who were traveling in the US. Fusco began travelling to Cuba and joining the scene of visual arts in Cuba and continued to do so until around the mid-1990s when she resigned as a result of post-Cold War cultural and political changes that took place in Cuba.

Fusco obtained the B.A from Semiotics in Semiotics from Brown University in 1982, and an M.A. on Modern Thought and Literature from Stanford University in 1985 and the Ph.D. on Art and Visual Culture from Middlesex University in 2005.
