In 1984, Hefer together with one half of champion New South Wales Kings Cup team were selected for 1984’s Olympic VIII for Los Angeles. Led by coach Reinhold Batschi who was directed by Steve Evans and with Hefer in the two- seat, they took home an Olympic bronze.

Hefer’s senior rowing experience was at his club Drummoyne Rowing Club in Sydney. In the Australian Rowing Championships in 1979 He won the national championship title in the lightweight M4- along together with Gardiner, his twin brother Graham, Geoff Webb and Graeme Wearne. In the year 1980, Graham Gardiner joined Hefer at Drummoyne and in the same year’s national championships Hefer was awarded two championship titles which included the M2-lightweight with Gardiner and the M4 lightweightwhich was won by Gardiner, Wearne and Michael Smith. In the year 1981, in those two teams Hefer returned to the track for those same titles, this time he was representing Balmain Rowing Club. Balmain Rowing Club and both to second place.
Hefer was chosen to receive Australian representatives in an L4-based LM4 for in the year 1980 World Rowing Championships in Hazewinkel the only lightweight championship that was one of the events in an Olympic year. Alongside Gardiner Hefer, he competed for the best national honors throughout the year against the Victorian team consisting of Charles Bartlett and Simon Gillett. The new Australian National Coaching Director Reinhold Batschi had just announced an all-small boat selection process and the selection of two teams that competed to form Australia’s IV Australian IV was evident. The team won the gold medal, and also won the 2nd light World Championship title. The following year , with the same team, Hefer raced at the 1981 World Rowing Championships in Munich and won their title.
