The year 2008 started badly for Waterford after the team lost their first game against Clare and also Manager Justin McCarthy. Despite this shaky beginning, Hennessy’s team reached the All-Ireland final for the first time in 45 years. Kilkenny was the main opponent, and then defeated Waterford by 3-30-1-13 to secure a third All Ireland title in a row.
In September 2011 Hennessy announced his retirement from inter-county action.
In 2011 Waterford attempted to make their own piece of history by winning back-to-back Munster titles. The game turned into a nightmare as the Tipperary forwards ran riot and put seven goals past Hennessy. Waterford were later defeated by eventual champions Kilkenny in the All-Ireland semi-final.
After a devastating one-point loss against Cork at the All-Ireland semi-finals of 2006. Hennessy received his debut silverware when he won an National Hurling League medal when Waterford defeated Kilkenny by 20 to 18 in the semi- final. He was later awarded his the first Munster winners’ medal when Waterford defeated Limerick by 3-17-1-14 in the provincial final. In the meantime, while Waterford were thought to be winning their first All-Ireland trophy for the first time for nearly 50 years, Limerick ambushed Waterford in the All-Ireland semi-final.

Hennessy was a debutant with the Waterford senior side during the 2005 National Hurling when he started against Kilkenny. In the following championship, He was replaced by Stephen Brenner as Waterford’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Hennessy joined the team after Hennessy replaced Stephen Brenner as first- choice ‘keeper in 2005. He was an integral part of the starting 15, before he retired in the year 2012.
