Godwin is enrolled in East Carolina University to play for the Pirates. He was red-shirted in his first season. In the following four years the catcher played in the catcher position for 126 games and also served for three years as co-captain of the team. He hit .322 with 15 RBIs and home runs during his senior season and was selected to the 1st Team All Colonial Athletic Association.
Godwin’s first career game as a head coach came on February 13, 2015, a 3–1 loss to Virginia. His first win came on February 21, 2015, against UNC Greensboro.
After two years with Mainieri at LSU and the College World Series in 2008, Godwin coached at UCF. While at UCF he was a part of many highly-ranked recruiting classes and also helped lead UCF’s Knights into an appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2011, their first appearance since 2004. Following his time with UCF, Godwin moved on to Ole Miss, where he was an assistant coach as well as recruiting coordinator. He was also the coordinator for recruiting in

Additionally to his basketball his career in East Carolina, Godwin also completed his magna cum laude degree in 2000, earning the degree of Bachelor of Science of Management Information Systems and then went on to earn an MBA in management information systems from ECU at the time of 2002. Godwin was a two-time Academic All-American selection during his playing career.
At Vanderbilt where he was the Commodores director of baseball operations prior joining Paul Mainieri’s team as Director of Baseball Operations at Notre Dame for the 2005 season. After two years with Notre Dame, he followed Mainieri to LSU before 2007, which was the season. In 2008 Godwin’s LSU offense scored .306 and scored 100 homers as well as 95 steal bases.
On June 25, 2014, Godwin was hired as head coach at his alma mater, East Carolina University, replacing former Pirates head coach Billy Godwin.
