Stern has published over 200 scientific articles as well as a variety of books, including an essential book on Gastrulation, “Gastrulation: from cells to embryo” (2004) as well as the popular lab manual “Essential Developmental Biology: a practical approach” (with Peter W. H. Holland 1993).
Stern was given the title of Doctor of Science (DSc) in Physiological Sciences from the University of Oxford (1993) and was made to be a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB) (2008) as well as in the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci) (2001) as well as in the Royal Society (FRS) (2008) as well as an associate participant in EMBO (2002) in addition to the Academia Europeea (2013) and a foreign member (Miembro Correspondiente) of the Latin-American Academy for Sciences (ACAL) (2002) in addition to Foreign Honorary Membership of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS). Stern has received the majority of his elementary (Escuela Evaristo Ciganda) and secondary (Liceo Suarez and Lycee Francais) education in Montevideo, Uruguay, and began to study medicine in the year 1971. In 1972, he emigrated into his home in United Kingdom and took a BSc (Hons) in Biology Sciences in the University of Sussex, where was he continued to study for the duration of his PhD (1978) under the direction under the direction of Brian Goodwin. He later transferred into the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology at University College London for postdoctoral training under Ruth Bellairs, a noted embryologist.
After his postdoctoral training, Stern held a University Demonstrator-ship in Anatomy at the University of Cambridge (1984-85) before being named lecturer within the Department of Human Anatomy at the University of Oxford, and student (College Fellow) of Christ Church (1985-1994). In 1994, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Department of Genetics and Development at Columbia University in New York. In 2001, he was back in the UK in 2001 and was appointed an “J Z Young” Professor and Director of the department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology in University College London. As part of his many responsibilities, he’s currently a member of the Scientific Council of Institut Pasteur in Paris (since 2012) and served as President of the International Society of Developmental Biologists (ISDB) from January 2010 until December 2013.
He was awarded the Ross Harrison Prize for 2017 by the International Society of Developmental Biologists.
