Gayford was born on a farm in Gisborne. When he was 11 years old, he was a student at the Palmerston North Boys’ High School. In 1995, he began his studies in Otago University to study for the Bachelor of Arts prior to transferring into the New Zealand Broadcasting School in Christchurch. While attending Broadcasting School, Gayford was able to pitch his student program Cow TV (1999) to Dunedin’s Channel 9.

On 19 January 2018, it was announced that the couple were expecting their first child in June. Their daughter Neve Te Aroha was born on 21 June at 4:45 pm in Auckland City Hospital.
