It is her first time as a female athlete from Hawaii to be awarded an Olympic medal at the Olympics.
A mere two months following in the year 2008. Olympic Games, Chun turned into a stunning performance to win the silver medal in the World 2008 Championships in Tokyo, Japan. She relied on her defense when winning a spirited victory of 1-0, 1-0 against Kazakhstan’s Jyldyz Eshimova-Turtbayeva on the Yoyogi National Stadium.
At the 2008 U.S. Olympic wrestling team trials in June, Chun gained the admiration of fans and media alike by staging a huge upset of seven-time national champion and 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Patricia Miranda. In the process, Chun, who stands 4 feet 11, fulfilled a lifelong dream, becoming the first wrestler from Hawai’i to qualify for a U.S. Olympic team.
In 2008, Chun taught English to kindergarten students in Japan.
Prior to her senior season, Chun accepted an invitation to join an event at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, eventually earning her degree from the University of Colorado branch there. After finishing second in the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2004 in the first time that a women’s wrestling was a sport during the Games Chun was named to the team four years later.

Chun was born into a judo background. She was a judo athlete, and won the junior championship prior to when she began wrestling during her senior year of Roosevelt High School in Honolulu, Hawaii. She won the state title in 1998, marking the first time girls’ wrestlers were sanctioned in a sanctioned sport.
Chun was among the original participants of the Valley program when it was first introduced in 1999. She also was among the most well-known and decorated. She was second at the U.S. World Team Trials and was a medalist at two of them: the U.S. Nationals and Pan American Games in the three seasons she spent in Marshall. She also won many college-level events.
