Cynthia Maria “Cindy” Nicholas, CM (August 20, 1957 May 19 May 19, 2016,) was a long- distance swimmer and politician in Ontario, Canada. In 1977, she became the very first female to make the two-way crossing of English Channel. From 1987 until 1990, she served as an Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.

It was the case that Liberals had to be defeated by NDP in the provincial election. Nicholas was defeated by NDP incumbent Steve Owens by 3,068 votes. Nicholas returned to her legal business practice at Scarborough.

The politician was elected in the Ontario legislature in 1987’s provincial election, representing the east Toronto area in Scarborough Centre, defeating New Democratic Party candidate Menno Vorster with 3,396 votes. In the following three years Nicholas worked as a backbench member of David Peterson’s cabinet. She served as the parliamentary assistant of the Solicitor General from 1989 until 1990.

At the age of 16, she gained the status of a provincial champion by swimming over Lake Ontario in 15 hours and 10 minutes. Later, she swam across the English Channel on 19 occasions and was the first to make a two-way crossing of an individual woman. She was the first woman to complete five two-way crossings, including two in the same year and earned her the title Queen of the Channel. She was named the top female athlete of 1977 and awarded the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award. In 1979, she was appointed a member of the Order of Canada. In 1993 she was admitted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2003, she was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.

Nicholas was educated at the University of Toronto and the University of Windsor. She worked as a lawyer in Scarborough, Ontario. She had a daughter. She died from liver cancer on May 19, 2016.
