Okobi was offered a scholarship by Purdue head coach Jim Colletto in January 1996. While he was able to draw attention from a variety of Division I teams but it was the sole full scholarship offer Okobi received. In 1996, he redshirted and was a four-year starting player at Purdue as a center (1997-99) in addition to centre (2000) under the head Coach, Joe Tiller. He was selected as a member of the All-Big Ten Second team in 1998, as a sophomore. He was honored in the preseason by numerous publications prior to this season which included numerous All American nods. Prior to the start of being a junior, the player was struck by an injury to his biceps while in training camp, and was predicted to miss the entirety of the 1999 season. He returned , and began the final six games the season. The year 2000 saw him was promoted from center to right guard and played a key role in helping Purdue achieve the initial Big Ten title in 34 years, and also a BCS Bowl berth (Rose Bowl). He was center for the finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 2000 as well as New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and played on an offensive line that included five potential NFL players as well as New England Patriots All-Pro Tackle, Matt Light. He was a right guard during the Hula Bowl All-Star game in Maui after the 2000 season.
