Webb was redshirted in the 1988 season during the 1988 season at Tennessee as the star player Reggie Cobb handled the bulk of the rushing. After a shaky beginning to the season the offensive line of Tennessee’s youth began to develop and the Vols concluded the year with five consecutive victories. With Cobb suspended during spring training the year 1989 Webb was able to carry 11 times and 83 yards during the Orange and White Game.
Webb began during the season of 1989 as back-up to Cobb. The two backs were a formidable running duo which became known by the name of “the Cobb-Webb connection”. As a backup to Cobb, Webb rushed for two touchdowns and 134 yards in a victory over UCLA and scored the 93 yards and scored one touchdown in the crucial victory against Auburn and ran for 83 yards with one touchdown in the victory against Georgia. Following the time that Cobb was removed from the team due to failing an chemical test. Webb took over as the team’s starter. In the Vols winning against Ole Miss, Webb rushed 35 times and gained 294 yards, surpassing the record for rushing in a single game of 248 yards, set by Johnnie Jones in 1983. Webb finished the full season on 27 runs, resulting in 45 yards in the game against Kentucky (he was unable to play in the final game of the regular season against Vanderbilt because of injuries). In Tennessee’s victory against Arkansas during the 90 Cotton Bowl, Webb exploded for 250 yards and two touchdowns with a score of 78 yards at the end of the third quarter to take home “Offensive Player of the Game” the award. Although he played in just 5 games Webb completed the season in the SEC with 1,236 yards. This was the second-highest number in the SEC after Emmitt Smith and the eighth-highest total in the entire country.
Undergoing surgery to repair his right knee, Webb was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the third round of the draft. His knee continued bothering him during training camp, however, and he again underwent surgery to repair torn cartilage in the knee. He spent the first part of his rookie year on injured reserve, and wasn’t activated until the Packers’ game against Minnesota in November. He played only marginally, however, and retired following the 1992 season.
