Ahmad, M.D. (born on the 25th of March 1968) is the team’s head physician of the New York Yankees and a member of the Major League Baseball Team Physicians Association. He is a professor of clinical orthopaedic surgery at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and an attending orthopaedic surgeon at the New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. The year 2013 was the first time New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez filed a medical negligence lawsuit against Ahmad and was later dismissed.

Ahmad has had many Tommy John surgeries. It’s an elbow surgery that is most often performed on college as well as professional players, particularly baseball players. It’s known by the medical profession as the ulnar ligament (UCL) reconstruction, which is a surgical graft procedure where the ligament that connects the ulnar and collateral of the elbow’s medial part is substituted by tendon that is found another part of the body. Tommy John operations are more frequently performed and raises the question of whether elbow injuries from sports are getting more frequent or if athletes who suffer from elbow injuries are having the surgery even though it is not required. In 2012, Ahmad released a study on the public’s views of the procedure. In the paper, he said that 33 percent of coaches and 37 percent of parents, 51 percent of high school athletes and 26% of college athletes believe the Tommy John surgery should be done on athletes with no elbow injuries to improve performance.

On the 4th of October on the 4th of October, 2013 Alex Rodriguez filed a lawsuit against Ahmad for negligence. The suit claimed Rodriguez was playing for too long and aggravated a hip injury in the month of October 2012 because Ahmad didn’t inform him that the MRI was able to reveal that there was a tear in the joint. Rodriguez ended up having surgery for this injury on January 13, 2013 and his recovery prevented him from returning to the Yankees until August of the same year. On June 21 in 2014, Rodriguez dismissed the lawsuit.
