Christine Girard (born January 3 1985) is an Canadian bodybuilder who hails who is from White Rock, British Columbia. She is a competitor in the 63-kg division. Girard is the very first Canadian female to earn the weightlifting gold medal in the Olympics when she took home silver in the 2012 London Olympics. She also took home Commonwealth Games and Pan American Games titles in her weight class , and has won numerous medals in both of these competitions. She is the holder of records in the Commonwealth games record and the Pan-American Games record in the Clean and Jerk.
Girard began to coach other weightlifters following her relocation to BC as she was in preparation for 2012’s Summer Olympics. Following returning after training for the Olympic Games, Girard began coaching in a larger role. She founded her own weightlifting team known as The Kilophile Weightlifting Club – and provides training services for other fitness centers especially at Crossfit Gyms.
In July 2016, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) reported that the IOC reanalyses of samples taken in 2012 uncovered prohibited anabolic agents in both the gold medalist and silver medalist. These were confirmed in 2018, making Girard the first Canadian gold medalist in female weightlifting since its introduction in 2000. This was confirmed in April 2018.
After a reanalysis of the 2008 Beijing Olympics in August 2016, the IWF reported that silver medalist Irina Nekrassova had used a prohibited substance. This was confirmed in 2018 and Girard was awarded a bronze medal, preceding her previous standing of first female Canadian weightlifting medalist to 2008. Girard received both the Beijing bronze and London gold medals at a ceremony in Ottawa on December 3, 2018.
Girard was raised from Elliot Lake, Ontario but she and her family moved to RouynNoranda, Quebec in 1992, when she was just seven years old. Then she relocated from Quebec to British Columbia in January 2010. Weightlifting was an important family activity to Girard along with her extended family. She still holds local and provincial roles in weightlifting in Quebec. On June 11, 2011, she was married to the coach she had worked with, Walter Bailey. She has three children.

Weightlifting became a hobby for Girard as well as her three sisters after they relocated to Quebec. She started training early and participated in one of the provincial championships at the age of twelve. Girard joined her national squad in 2001, at 16,, and she took part in Greece. The year 2002 was the time she took home the bronze medal during the Commonwealth Games which she improved over in 2006, winning the silver medal. In 2006, at the University World Championships she won the bronze medal. The next time she won silver medal at the 2007 Pan American Games. Girard was ranked 8th in the 2007 World Weightlifting Championships with a total of 221 pounds. Girard began her 2008 Summer Olympics in the Summer Olympics, and she did better than her previous performance, finishing fourth with a total of 228 kilograms and was three kilograms away from a gold medal.
Girard continued to build on her achievements when she finally won her crown as champion after she took home her gold at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and finished the Commonwealth Games medal collection. To win her gold medal, Girard made the Commonwealth Games record for the snatch with 100 kg. In the clean and jerk event she added 130 kg , resulting in an overall weight of 235 kilograms that were also Commonwealth records. Girard then dominated her 2011 Pan American Games when she was awarded gold medal in the weight category in Guadalajara.
At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Girard participated in the women’s 63 kg. She finished fourth in the snatch portion, then second in the clean and jerk, lifting 133 kg. Her total of 236 kg put her third, behind Maiya Maneza and Svetlana Tsarukayeva. She became the first Canadian woman, and third Canadian overall, to win a medal in weightlifting. Girard said that winning the Olympic medal was one of her top two best moments in life, “It is very hard to describe how I feel. Four years ago in Beijing I came fourth, and since then I have spent the past four years training through injuries and various changes in my life to get to this moment. All I have been thinking about is getting on the podium. Now I have reached it. It feels good. I should say my wedding comes close, but this is completely different.
