Christian Thielemann (born 1 April 1959 in West Berlin) is a German conductor from Germany. He is Chief Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Director of the Salzburg Easter Festival.

Thielemann is a regular conductor of the Bayreuth Festival, following his debut in 2000 in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger of Nurnberg as well as in the Salzburg Festival. Following the decision made in August 2008 by the Richard Wagner Festival Foundation to nominate Katharina Wagner as well as Eva Wagner- Pasquier as successors to Wolfgang Wagner as directors of the Bayreuth Festival, Thielemann was appointed Music Advisor. In June 2015 the Bayreuth Festival informally declared the appointment Thielemann as the festival’s music director.

He conducted the Vienna Philharmonic 2019 New Year’s Concert for the very first time.

Thielemann was the subject of controversy following his attribution of anti- semitic comments to his friend in 2000 regarding Daniel Barenboim, which Thielemann later claimed to have denied. A different controversy has been triggered by Thielemann’s public statements in support of his support for the Pegida movement.

His debut season in 1991/92 at America. He was employed at a variety of smaller German theaters, including The Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen as well as located in Karlsruhe, Hanover, at Dusseldorf’s Deutsche Oper am Rhein as the First Kapellmeister and at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Nurnberg acting as Generalmusikdirektor after which he returned to Deutsche Oper Berlin in 1991 to conduct Wagner’s Lohengrin. He also helped Daniel Barenboim at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus.

In 2003, Thielemann was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz). In October 2011, he received honorary membership of the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 2015, Thielemann won the Richard Wagner Award (Richard-Wagner-Preis) of Leipzig. He served as the Humanitas Visiting Professor in Opera Studies at Oxford University in January 2016.
