Christian Bjornshoj Poulsen (born 28 February 1980) is a Danish former professional footballer. Following his first professional football club, Holbaek He played for several European teams as an attacking midfielder. taking home the Danish Superliga championship with F.C. Copenhagen and The German DFB-Ligapokal trophy alongside FC Schalke 04, and the European UEFA Cup with Spanish team Sevilla FC, later also playing for Italian Serie A club Juventus as well as Premier League side, Liverpool, French side Evian, and Dutch club Ajax.
He is a regular part of the Denmark national team since the start of 2001. He has played in 92 games and scored six goals for Denmark. He was a part of Denmark in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2004 European Championship international tournaments. Poulsen was named the 2001 Danish Young Player of the Year and also won both the 2005 and 2006. Danish player of the year Awards; the first person to win two consecutive years.
In the group stage of the 2004 European Championship, following the 0–0 draw with Italy, Danish television showed Poulsen being spat on by Italian playmaker Francesco Totti. Totti received a three-match ban and gave a “full public apology”, after failing in his claim that he was provoked by Poulsen. Italy were subsequently eliminated from the tournament in the group stage.
Poulsen was selected for the Danish squad at the 2004 European Championship. He played three of Denmark’s four games, before Denmark was eliminated from the tournament. With Schalke, Poulsen won the 2005 DFB Ligapokal cup trophy. His displays for Schalke and the Danish national team earned him the 2005 Danish Player of the Year award. After four seasons with the club, which included well over 100 appearances, his contract expired in June 2006. Long- lasting rumours linked him to several teams, including Italian clubs Inter Milan and A.C. Milan.
After a successful start to 2001/02 Superliga season Poulsen got a call-up to the Danish national team by the national coach Morten Olsen. He made his debut in the 1-1 draw against the Netherlands on the 10th of November, 2001. FCK finished runners-up in the 2001-02 Superliga and Poulsen was awarded the 2002 FCK player of the year. He was picked to the Danish team to participate in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where the first time he was only an extra. He played in the three group stage matches as he gradually increased his playing time with each match. After two yellow cards during the first group phase, Poulsen was disqualified at the time Denmark had to be eliminated during the knockout phase by England. Christian Poulsen took with FC Copenhagen during the 2001-02 campaign as the champions of the Champions League qualification and withdrew from the league against Lazio. The team continued to play because of the demise from the UEFA Cup and retired from there in the match against Borussia Dortmund. The family was born in Asnaes, Poulsen started playing youth football at the club local to him Asnaes BK. He then moved to the amateur club Holbaek at 15 years old, when he made his senior debut at 17 years old age. He was the captain of the team numerous times. He was selected to the Danish under-19 football team in September of 1998 and played in four games for the side.
On September 20, 2000, He took part in an initial trial with F.C. Copenhagen in the top flight of the Danish Superliga championship, and signed his first professional contract within just a few days. Poulsen played a dominant role in the midfield attacking of FCK in the wake of the heart troubles of the former Norwegian national midfielder Stale Solbakken, who was injured in March 2001. His start in Schalke was made easier by the fact that his teammate in the Danish national team, Ebbe Sand, also played for the club. Through his time at Schalke, Poulsen played a number of matches at right back, but eventually secured himself a spot in the central midfield for both club and country.
