Christian Hartmann (born 15 April 1959 in Heidelberg) is an German historian from Germany. He is a research fellow of the Institute of Contemporary History (Institut for Zeitgeschichte) in Munich.

Hartmann is also a consultant for Hartmann frequently advises on documentaries and films of the past which include War of the Century (UK 1999), Enemy at the Gates (Germany/France 2001), Der Untergang (Germany 2004,), Sophie Scholl – Die letzten Tage (Germany, 2005), Napola – Elite fur den Fuhrer (Germany, 2004), Tagebuch eines Lagerkommandanten (Germany 2011.), Unsere Mutter, unsere Father (Germany 2013,) And the book Thief (US/UK 2014). Hartmann is also on the advisory board of the academic department of the TV channel History.

Since 1993, Hartmann has been research fellow at the Institute of Contemporary History in Munich/Berlin, where he was, among other functions, deputy editor- in-chief of the journal Vierteljahrshefte fur Zeitgeschichte from 1998 to 2012 and director of the research project ‘Wehrmacht in der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur 1933-1945’ (The Wehrmacht in the National Socialist dictatorship, 1933-1945) from 1999 to 2009, from which his study Wehrmacht im Ostkrieg also emerged and which was concluded with the edited collection Der deutsche Krieg im Osten 1941-1944. From March 2012 until June 2015 Hartmann directed the revision of Hitler’s book Mein Kampf.

Hartmann grew up in Tubingen. The year 1981 was the first time he was employed at his first job at the Tel Joseph kibbutz in Israel. Following the compulsory army service, he pursued studies in his history as well as German and sports at universities such as Tubingen, Cologne and Freiburg. He graduated from the university in 1986 by passing his First State Exam for grammar school teaching. Then, in 1989, he earned the requirements for his PhD at the University of Cologne by completing a dissertation about the general Franz Halder, chief of the General Staff of the German Army from 1938 to 1942. His supervisor for his doctoral thesis was Andreas Hillgruber.

From 1990 until in 1991 Hartmann served as an advisor for the Political Archives of the German Foreign Office in Bonn and was an active member of the international historical committee on the Akten for the German Auswartigen Politics 1918-1945. The year 1992 was the time he was appointed for a full year by the Brandenburg Ministry of Science, Research and Culture in Potsdam and worked as consultant.

From 2004 to 2009, Hartmann was furthermore visiting lecturer at the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich. As a lieutenant colonel of the reserve, he is currently lecturer at the Military Academy of the Bundeswehr (General Staff College) in Hamburg. In 2016/17, he was deployed in Mali as Strategic Advisor for the European Union Training Mission.
