Christopher Anderson “Chris” Whyte (born 2 September 1961) is an English former footballer who was a central defender. He played almost 400 appearances in both the Football League and Premier League. There were lengthy stints at Arsenal, West Bromwich Albion, Leeds United – where he played a key role of their 1991-92 team that won the title and Birmingham City, and also played for a variety of teams in England as well as abroad. Whyte was selected by England at the under-21 level.
The club in question did not offer Whyte an agreement, and frustrated, he went to The United States and played for two years in the Major Indoor Soccer League for New York Express and Los Angeles Lazers. At the end of summer 1988, Whyte got a call to come back to England by the Second Division of West Bromwich Albion. Whyte played his Albion debut in the League Cup tie against Peterborough United in September 1988 and finished the 1988-89 season with the club’s Player of the Year.
He then returned to the United States for a spell with the Raleigh Express in the A-League before returning to England to play under former Arsenal teammate Ian Allinson, manager of Harlow Town of Rymans League Division One. In 2000, he played for Finnish third-tier club HyPS.
However, following Arsenal’s shock League Cup loss to Walsall in November 1983, and the subsequent demotion from the team of Terry Neill, Whyte was removed from the team to be replaced by new player Tommy Caton. The appearance the arrival of Tony Adams forced Whyte further down the pecking list at Highbury. He did not play for Arsenal in 1984-85, but was instead being loaned for Crystal Palace, and although there was a brief period in the role of an emergency striker during 1985-86, he received an opportunity to transfer for free at the close of the season. He played in 113 games for Arsenal and scored eight goals.

Whyte was born in Islington, London, and began his professional career as a junior player at Arsenal and made his professional debut on September 28, 1978. A defender who was positioned at the position of centre half (but not as often as a full back) The defender earned his Arsenal first-team debut as a substitute Panathinaikos during the UEFA Cup on 30 September 1981. He made his debut during the Football League against Manchester City on October 17 and was able to start the entire Arsenal squad in all but one of their remaining league games that season, alongside David O’Leary in central defence. Whyte stood out for his confidence and coolness, and also his timing and good judgment in the field. In the next year, Whyte continued as a regular at Arsenal when the team made it to the semi-finals of both national cup tournaments. He also increased his total of England under-21 caps to four.
Whyte was selected four times by the England under-21 side. The first and second appearance came in the semifinals in the 1982 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in April 1982, however He did not take part in the final. The third and fourth times he played were later in the year in qualifying matches for the following tournament.
Whyte returned to the top flight in 1990, when he was signed for £450,000 by Howard Wilkinson’s Leeds United. He was nearly ever-present for the next three seasons, putting in 146 appearances as Leeds won the 1991–92 First Division title. In 1993, he moved to Birmingham City, winning the 1994–95 Second Division title with the Blues. After a brief spell at Coventry City on loan, Whyte left Birmingham in 1996, and subsequently played for Charlton Athletic, Leyton Orient, Oxford United and Rushden & Diamonds.
