Christopher “Chris” Ryall (born on April 2nd in 1969) is known best as the President and the former Editor-in Chief of IDW Publishing (June 2004-present) as well as as a writer in the world of comic books. In February of 2011 the Eisner Award- nominated comic, Zombies vs. Robots co-created with creator Ashley Wood, was optioned by Sony Pictures for Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes with Mike Flanagan as director.
In 2009, writer and co-writer Scott Tipton released the prose introduction to the industry of comic books, Comic Books 101, through IMPACT Publishing. Alongside Ryall and Tipton’s comprehensive overview of comics ‘ history along with creators’ contributions, the publication also features contributors from creators like Stan Lee, Harlan Ellison, Gene Simmons, Mark Waid, Joe Hill and Brian Lynch.
Ryall wrote the first inter-company crossover for IDW in 2011: Infestation, which paired the Transformers, Star Trek, Ghostbusters, and G.I. Joe in an adventure with Ryall’s own Zombies vs Robots. He also directly oversaw 2012’s Mars Attacks IDW franchise, and wrote two of the issues, Mars Attacks Kiss, and Mars Attacks Zombies vs Robots.
His 2013-2014 work includes The Colonized, co-created with artist Drew Moss, The Hollows, co-created with artist Sam Kieth, and Kiss Kids, with co-author Tom Waltz and artist Jose Holder. All three series were published in 2013. In July 2014, Ryall won the Best Editor award at the True Believers Awards (formerly the Eagle Awards) at the London Film & Comic Con.
In February of 2006, IDW promoted Ryall to the position of Publisher. Some of the properties he assisted develop and lead through IDW Publishing were Hasbro’s Transformers, Locke & Key, Toho’s Godzilla, CBS/Paramount’s Star Trek, HBO’s True Blood and 2000 AD’s Judge Dredd. Under Ryall’s leadership at IDW and the company’s growth, IDW was named a top publisher, was awarded the debut Eisner Awards, published the first ever inter-license crossover, and the first Doctor Who crossover, and is currently the fourth-largest publishing company in the US.

in 2002 Ryall had been hired by director Kevin Smith to run the entertainment- oriented MoviePoopShoot.com One of Smith’s first ventures outside of the realm of filmmaking. The site first appeared as a part of the 2001 movie Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back as a mockumentary site. Ryall together with web design expert Ming Chen, news writer/editor Scott Tipton and many freelance cartoonists and columnists, officially created the site on June 17th the 17th of June, 2002. Alongside serving as the site’s Editor-in Chief, Ryall wrote multiple weekly columns for the site which included “One Hand Clapping”, “TV Recommendations”, “A Night Out” as well as “TV Pilot Reviews”. Ryall continued to oversee the website following his joining IDW in the middle of 2004. Ryall resigned from the site in January of 2006.
On the 21st of June, 2004 Ryall joined the San Diego-based comic book publisher IDW Publishing as the company’s second Editor-in-Chief. Ryall’s debut comic-book project as a writer for IDW is an adaptation for the movie Shaun of the Dead with artist Zach Howard; he also contributed to the creation of the horror magazine revived Doomed (for which both he and Ashley Wood received an Eisner nomination for the adaption of Richard Matheson’s “Blood Son” short story) and was the main character’s dialogist character in the story, Ms. Doomed, as well as writing numerous tales for four of the issues. in addition, he developed George A. Romero’s Land of the Dead with artist Gabriel Rodriguez; Masters of Horror with artist Jeremy Haun; he co-wrote with Simon Furman the first Transformers film prequel, along with the artist, Don Figueroa; Ryall and Rodriguez once more modified Beowulf; Gene Simmons House of Horrors; a prose short story in 30 Days of Night, the DVD-in-comic for the film Role Models; and Weekly World News with artist Alan Robinson. Ryall adapted an epic story by Clive’s The Great and Secret Show with Rodriguez drawing the entire 12 issues. Ryall was the writer for four of 8 issues in IDW’s Kiss comics, collaborating with artist Jamal Igle and Wagner Reis and 2 issues for Kiss Solo, and co-wrote with Tom Waltz four issues of Kiss Kids together with the artist Jose Holder. Ryall has also recently written the Stephen King/Joe hill tribute to Richard Matheson, “Throttle” together with illustrator Nelson Daniel and Matheson’s own “Duel” in a book known as Road Rage. Ryall led an inter-company crossover featuring Mars Attacks and a variety of IDW properties. He also wrote two books: Mars Attacks Kiss and Mars Attacks Zombies vs Robots. The year 2014 saw Ryall together with Sam Kieth once again collaborated to launch an all-new miniseries that ran for four issues. Mars Attacks: First Born.
In October 2010, Ryall contributed a prose story, “Twilight of the Gods”, to Classics Mutilated, a prose “monster-lit” anthology, and in 2014, published his first Zombies vs Robots prose story, “Meaner Than a Junkyard Dog”, in the anthology Zombies vs Robots: This Means War.
