Kenneth Christopher “Chris” McKinstry (February 12 1967 – – January 23rd January 23, 2006) was an artificial intelligence researcher. He was the lead researcher in the MISTIC project, which was first launched at the end of May in 1996. McKinstry founded Mindpixel, a Mindpixel Project in the month of July and shut it down in December. McKinstry’s AI research and subsequent death coincided with another modern AI researcher, Push Singh and his MIT Open Mind Common Sense Project.

On the 20th of January, 2006, two articles were posted on McKinstry’s blog. One of them was titled “Very Serious Thoughts on Suicide” the author wrote “Why did I even bother to write this? As a matter of evidence, to show that I was there and ahead of everyone else you. It’s time to go.” and then cited the suicide aphorisms of a dozen like “Suicide is man’s method of saying to God that ‘You can’t dismiss me — I’m quitting.'” (attributed to Bill Maher).

McKinstry is the subject of a 2010 documentary called The Man Behind the Curtain which recounts his innovative work and his mental battles.
