Following his college career, Cleary moved to Germany where he joined Second Division side Karlsruher SC. After two years with KSC, Cleary’s agent Bernd Wulffen, was involved in talks in talks with Eintracht Frankfurt following a successful trial period of four days however communication between the parties was shattered due to unknown reasons. The result was that in 2004 Cleary relocated into England and signed an agreement that was not binding for Barnsley FC, but soon quit for Worksop Town FC with Assistant Manager Ronnie Glavin and four other players. Cleary was reported to be pursuing moves towards Sheffield Wednesday F.C. (or Doncaster Rovers F.C. following his performance in the Doncaster Rovers F.C. club’s FA Cup games. (Cleary scored 6 goals, and 1 assist during the three matches). He was dismissed in 2005, after sustaining an ankle injury, which required two significant operations. He has come back to United States.

Cleary played soccer in college during his time at Boston College from 1998 to 2001 under Ed Kelly. Cleary was an Big East All-Conference selection and Regional All-American his senior season as well as the winner of the Tom McElroy Scholarship. Cleary played in every game during his four seasons at Chestnut Hill in the wing position, mostly in the wing position of an outside. In his junior year, Boston College won the Big East tournament over Manfred Schellscheidt’s Seton Hall University squad. Cleary completed his college career in the top 10 of Boston College for both points total and assists.
On October 6, 2004, Cleary became the first American to score a hat-trick during the FA Cup. Worksop Town FC defeated Droylesden FC 3-1 in front of thousands of fans. After the hat-trick Cleary became a idol with the Worksop fans who would sing “USA USA USA” whenever Cleary did something to please them.
The second of four siblings, Cleary grew up in Milton, Massachusetts where he began high school at Catholic Memorial High School, later transferring to Noble and Greenough School. A member of the Massachusetts Olympic Development Teams from ages 13–19 and playing youth football for Charles River United and F.C. Greater Boston Bolts, Cleary managed to win five state titles and three Regional Championships, and was named Tournament MVP three times. Cleary was also named to the All-Conference Team in high school three times, twice named to the All-State Team and twice named to the All-Region Team. He finished his high school career with over 110 points. Cleary was also an All-Conference basketball and baseball player in his senior year of high school and had been recruited to play all three sports in college.
