His first win was an event at the age of 1979, on the streets of Ogden, Utah.
In the early 1990s Hanauer was the victim of a string of serious injuries sustained in high-speed hydroplane accidents. These accidents ultimately led Hanauer to take the decision to retire in the year 1996. He also suffered from a severe disorder called spasmodic dysphonia that led to him losing his voice. He would be able to regain it following the discovery of a procedure that injects botox right into your throat. He is still volunteering the time he has at a facility for children with disabilities in Seattle. He is also the transportation driver in the service of Disabled American Veterans, bringing the disabled from homes, and then driving their patients to the VA Medical Center in Seattle.
He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1995.
In 1986, Hanauer broke Garfield Wood’s record for longest streak of consecutive Gold Cup wins. In 1987, he took home the sixth time in a row Gold Cup, breaking Gar Wood’s record. He was the seventh time he won a Gold Cup victory in 1988. In 1990, he also was crowned his first National Championship.

Lee Edward “Chip” Hanauer (born July 1st 1954, in Seattle) was the third- highest-performing Unlimited Hydroplane racer in the history of. He has been the winner of the APBA Gold Cup a record 11 times, and was the pilot of one of the more renowned yachts in APBA history which was that of the Miss Budweiser, in the beginning to mid-1990s. He was admitted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1995 as their newest inductee. In 2005 He was admitted to the International Motorized Vehicles Hall of Fame. He was in 1991 when he briefly removed himself from the water to go auto racing, only to return after a few seasons.
In 1982, Hanauer was appointed driver of Atlas Van Lines, replacing the owner and driver Bill Muncey, who died during the final race of the season. Muncey requested his widow, Fran to take over the team in case the driver passed away. Fran chose Hanauer as the driver, who was chosen by Bill to succeed him to take over the wheel. Hanauer won his very first Unlimited National and World Championship. In 1985, he won the fourth time in a row Gold Cup and another National Championship.
At the end of the 1990 season, Hanauer left hydroplane racing and tried his hand at auto racing, driving for Toyota, but joined Bernie Little’s Miss Budweiser hydroplane racing team in 1992. The team owner of the Toyota- sponsored auto racing team for which Hanauer briefly drove in 1991 later commented that Hanauer would certainly have been successful in automobile racing had he pursued that career progression.
