Ahanotu was a student at Berkeley High School where he was a rugby and football player. He was accepted to Columbia University, Hampton University, UCLA, and The University of California, Berkeley (Cal). Ahanotu chose to enroll at Cal and to try his hand at joining the team. Following his redshirt freshman year, Chidi began playing during his second season. Following this season, Ahanotu received an athletic scholarship full-time and was the first left defensive lineman with the Golden Bears. Chidi was the starting player for the next three football seasons, and was awarded 1st team All-Pac-10 distinction as the top player in his field. Ahanotu studied Integrative Biology and was planning to attend medical school in order to become a physician before entering the NFL.
