Cheryl l'Hirondelle is one of the most popular and richest Media Artist who was born on September 20, 1958 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Cheryl L’Hirondelle (also Waynohtew, Cheryl Koprek; born September 20th 1958) is a Canadian multidisciplinary media artist, performer and Grammy- winning music producer. She is of Cree/Metis (non-status/treaty), French, German and Polish origins. Her work is connected to her heritage. She investigates the Cree worldview or nehiyawin via the body, mind emotions, as well as spirit. She focuses on what is it to be living in the present day, both in time and space.

She studied studying at the Alberta College of Art from 1980-81. Then, she completed a 2D class in the University of Calgary for one summer session. She went to an evening class at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Ontario in 1990 and also took voice, theory , and composition in private for several years prior to the course. She also trained to become yoga instructors through the Calgary Yoga Centre as well as Herbalism at the Wild Rose College of Natural Healing in Calgary. In 2015 she received an MDes in inclusive Design at OCAD University, receiving the OCAD University President’s medal. In 2016, she was a PhD candidate at SMARTlab in University College Dublin (UCD) and was granted the Irish Research Council Enterprise scholarship grant, in conjunction together with Irish world music Kila Records. Early work such as the performance work dearth (by means of the senses), was a collaboration with Mark Dicey at the Walter Phillips Gallery at the Banff Centre in Alberta in 1992. It worked to disconcert personal rituals and myths, as they perform using staging codes observed by young children who are playing at being adults (playing house) to enact family roles and tensions.

In 2004, L’Hirondelle was one of two Aboriginal from Canada (with Candice Hopkins) to be invited to Dakar Biennale for Contemporary African Art in Dakar, Senegal. They were the first Canadian Aboriginal artists/curators to present their work there.

Since the beginning of the 1980s, L’Hirondelle has been performing across the country and internationally. She has performed in a range of styles, in styles from world-music to punk as well as choruses. Her work includes storytelling, performance art spoken word, audio art installation-specific sites, public art interactive projects, and other new media. Her work has been featured in galleries run by artists as well as public art galleries, festivals, museums and. The year 2001 saw her perform in front of Prince Charles along with the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, Linda Haverstock at the Prince of Wales dinner in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The audience she performed for been also comprised of the Governor General Canada Michaelle Jean.

L’Hirondelle was born in Edmonton, Alberta (amiskwaciy-waskahikan), Canada. Her family comes from the Papaschase First Nation, Alberta and also resided in the Kikino Metis settlement for several years. L’Hirondelle’s father came to Germany when he was young men shortly after WWII. He initially was employed as an inventor at CIL and later in the oil industry , moving her family across the western provinces in order to be near the majority Gas plant start-ups. The family eventually settled in Calgary at the age of 64, and she went to St. Margaret’s Elementary and Junior High School. Her name (L’Hirondelle which is Her mother’s maiden surname) is a reference to a swallow, also known as which is a “migratory swift-flying songbird.”

L’Hirondelle studied music as a child. She first became seriously involved in musical performance as the lead singer in Vile, an all-female punk band in Calgary. In the 1990s, in Toronto, she sang with Anishnawbe Quek an intertribal women’s group. Around 1995, she formed the duo Nikamok with Joseph Naytowhow. She self-produced Nikamok’s self-titled album in 2000, and it was nominated for a Prairie Music Awards (now known as the Western Canadian Music Awards).
