In 2017 Chen and his colleague, Deng Hongkui of Peking University utilized CRISPR gene editing in order to transplant human HSCs containing the edited CCR5 gene into mice and then conferred HIV resistance in the mice. They then used the method for treating an AIDS patient who was suffering from acute lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). This was the first time that CRISPR was utilized on an human HIV patient. 19 months after patients’ ALL was completely in remission. Their study proved the efficacy of CRISPR in humans, but the therapy wasn’t effective in treating AIDS since just 5%- eight percent of the bone marrow cells had the altered CCR5 gene, which is much less than the desired 100 percent. The research is released by The New England Journal of Medicine in September following the death of Chen. Chen had passed away.

He was director of both the PLA Institute of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Research as well as the Beijing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Therapy Laboratory. He is renowned for his work on hematopoietic stem-cell treatment for leukemia, he was recognized with an award called the State Science and Technology Progress Award (First Class) in 2015 as well as the Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize in the year 2016.
