Chelsea Buckland (born January 20 1990) is an Canadian former soccer player she played with Oregon State Beavers and the Canadian women’s national team. The native of Greater Vancouver, British Columbia She was a player at both the junior and senior women’s levels at Vancouver Whitecaps FC, before joining the Beavers in the NCAA ranks in the year 2008. She was a member of the national team just prior to her junior college year . She was part of Canada in the 2010 FIFA World Cup (as an alternative) as well as the 2012 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Attended Sands Secondary in North Delta, British Columbia, she was the soccer coach of the school’s squad in scoring over three seasons as well as playing on the school’s volleyball and basketball teams. Before graduating in the summer of of 2008, Buckland was featured in the local Province newspaper as one of the best British Columbian students at high school.
Following Buckland’s junior year with Oregon State, she joined the Canadian national team’s training camp in Sweden. Head coach John Herdman has recalled the camp as a turning point in Buckland’s career with the national team and praised her ability to generate plays with other forwards. On November 22, 2011, she recorded her first international goal in a friendly against Sweden. Scored against goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl, the goal came two minutes after coming off the bench and tied the score at 1–1, before Canada scored again to win the game.
Never having played for any of Canada’s national junior teams, Buckland was selected as an alternate to the senior women’s 2011 FIFA World Cup squad following her performance in a January 2011 training camp. Prior to the tournament, she was additionally named to Canada’s team for the 2011 Cyprus Cup, an annual invitational tournament. Canada went on to win the championship, defeating the Netherlands 2–1 in the final. Buckland did not play in any tournament games, later debut with the national team on May 15, 2011, a 1–1 friendly draw against Switzerland. At the World Cup, held in Germany, Canada failed to advance from the group stage after losing all three of their games; Buckland did not appear in any contests.
After starting her college career with a redshirt year at the age of eight, she was a part of in all Beavers 23 games of 2009, with one of them being a game that she played. She scored her two first goals for the university in a game with Cal State Northridge, en leading the team with seven goals and 16 points. The 54 shots she scored (24 in goal) also were the most efficient team. After her first year at college she was named to the All-Freshman Pac-10 Team.

The year 2006 was the first time Buckland became a member of her first team, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Prospects Program. The following year she was playing for the team’s Pacific Coast Soccer League (PCSL) team, scoring 11 goals, even though she missed three-quarters of the time. The Whitecaps made it to the finals in the PCSL Challenge Cup playoffs, in which they were defeated with a score of 4-2 to The Tri-Cities Xtreme. In addition to league play, Buckland participated at the Keg Spring Cup and the San Diego Surf Cup with the Whitecaps Prospects. In the first event which was which was held at Victoria, British Columbia, in March 2008 her goals were game-changing during the semi-final against The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and in the final in the final against the University of Victoria Vikes to ensure that the team won the title. A few months later, in August, she scored five goals over the course of five games in the second tournament, which was a U19 contest against teams of youth in across the United States. In the process, she helped Vancouver to reach the semifinals they fell 3-1 to Northern California State champions Mustang FC.
When she graduated at the age of 16 from Sands Secondary, Buckland moved into the college ranks with an athletic scholarship to the Oregon State Beavers of the NCAA’s Pacific-10 Conference. Prior to her decision to join Oregon State in December 2007, Canadian national team player Karina LeBlanc tried to get her attention in the direction of Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Buckland advanced to the Whitecaps’ to W-League team in 2009, joining them midway through the season. She appeared in 6 of the team’s 12 games (starting in one of them) and recorded two assists. Vancouver finished fifth in the Western Conference, failing to qualify for the playoffs.
