Charlie Hickey (born September 24 1964) is a well-known American professional baseball player from the college level. Hickey has served as head coach at Central Connecticut since the 2000 season, guiding his Blue Devils to six NCAA tournaments. Prior to that, he was the director of the team at Providence over three consecutive seasons (1997-1999). Providence announced its decision to end its program before the start of the season in 1999 however, the team was able to win the 1999 Big East title and advanced to the NCAA Regional final.
On October 28, 1998 Providence declared it was going to reduce its baseball team following the 1999 season because of the Title IX gender equity rules. The season that followed, Providence finished third in the Big East and went 49-16 to create the New England record for wins. They also won all the Big East’s top prizes, including Hickey selected as the Coach of the Year. In the Big East Tournament, the Friars began the tournament 1-1 beating 4th-seeded Seton Hall in the opening game, before falling to the second seeded Rutgers. The team followed that with three straight wins (over Notre Dame, Rutgers along with St. John’s) to be the champion and earn the automatic ticket for at the NCAA Tournament. The Friars were a two-seed in the Tallahassee Regional, the Friars fell in the opening game to Jacksonville 7-5. They avoided elimination with an 11-1 victory against The Citadel. In the 1-1 match (a match rematch with Jacksonville), Providence fell behind by 7-1, but they the team rallied to win 9-8 the game, which featured an altercation between the bench and supporters from Florida State’s supporters. In the regional championshipgame, Florida State defeated the Friars 14-3 in the final game of the season. The team’s championship season was the topic of a book written of Paul Lonardo and received national attention during the debate on Title IX.
In 2012, Hickey surpassed Hank Majlinger to become Central Connecticut’s winningest coach. In 2013, he won his 500th career game. In 2014, multiple Blue Devils were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft for the first time in his tenure at CCSU– pitcher Nick Neumann was taken by the Pirates, and outfielder J.P. Sportman was taken by the Athletics.
Hickey played as the coach at Providence over three consecutive seasons (1997-1999). The Friars in 1997 were not able to participate in playing in the Big East Tournament. In 1998 the team was successful in winning 31 games and secured an Big East Tournament berth. In the tournament, they lost their first game against St. John’s, then beat Rutgers as well as West Virginia before being eliminated by Notre Dame.

Hickey started his career in coaching as an assistant coach at Providence in 1992. He remained in that post for five years, later becoming the head coach after Paul Kostacopoulos left to become the head coach at Maine after the 1996 season.
Prior to taking on the role of NCAA director of coaching, Hickey was an assistant coach for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League between 1992 and 1994 as well as the director of the New England Collegiate Basketball League’s Eastern Tides in 1996.
Hickey was offered the head coaching position at Central Connecticut (which he accepted) by retiring CCSU coach George Redman. Under Hickey, CCSU had a great deal of success in the early 2000s. The Blue Devils qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2002, 2003, and 2004, also winning NEC regular season titles in 2001 and 2006. Hickey was named NEC Coach of the Year in 2001, 2003, and 2006. Since 2006, CCSU has not won an NEC regular season title, but the Blue Devils won the NEC Tournament in 2010 to reach their fourth NCAA Tournament under Hickey.
