Chang began her career at the annual World Archery Championships in 2013 and won the title of team recurve for women along with Ki Bo-bae, Yun Ok-hee following a victory over Belarus in a low scoring final. In the following year, she took home two silver medals during the 2014 Asian Games, reaching the gold medal match for two of them: the female team as well as women’s individual recurve competitions. Together with her teammates Jung Dasomi and Lee Tuk-young she won the fifth consecutive women’s championship with a convincing win over China however, she was beaten by Jung by seven set points to three in the women’s individual final.

In the spring of 2016 Chang won qualification for the South Korean Olympic team on her second attempt, joining the reigning Olympic champion Ki Bo-bae and the women’s recurve world number one Choi Mi-sun for the women’s individual and women’s team events in Rio de Janeiro. Although the trio were widely expected to win their nation’s eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal in the team competition, it was Choi and Ki who were tipped for success in the individual discipline after strong performances in the 2015 World Archery Championships, with Chang later being described by Reuters as the “least- fancied” of the three Korean women.

Chang became the world’s top female recurve archer in June 2017. She continued her success at the top of the game after qualifying for the annual Archery World Cup final in September, winning gold with Kim Woojin in the mixed team event and bronze in the women’s individual competition. She achieved a further team gold medal at the World Archery Championships held in Mexico City the following month, and with teammates Choi Mi-sun and Kang Chae-young defeated host nation Mexico in the final, earning South Korea its thirteenth World Championship women’s team gold medal. Chang also reached the final of the women’s individual event, but after struggling in the windy conditions lost against the Russian world number three Ksenia Perova.

Beginning archery as a child, Chang made her international debut in 2008 and then made it to the national team’s senior squad two years after. She narrowly missed her spot in the 2012 Summer Olympics at London but was later able to win gold medals for her team during the 2013 World Archery Championships and 2014 Asian Games. Following her victory in Rio’s Olympics at Rio she won further gold awards at the World Archery Championships and Asian Games and was an active competitor in the Archery World Cup. Chang was the most popular female recurve archer on the World Archery Rankings from 2017 to the year 2019.

Chang Hye-jin (Korean: janghyejin ; Korean pronunciation: [tcaNG.ce.dzin] or [tcaNG] [ce.dzin born on 13 May, 1987) is an South Korean archer and two-time Olympic gold medallist. She was awarded both gold medals in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics at Rio de Janeiro, winning both in the women’s team as well as the women’s single events.
