Chandralekha Perera is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on December 1, 1961 in Kurunegala, Sri Lanka. Chandralekha Perera (Sinhala: cndrleekaa pereeraa ) (born 1 December 1961), is a popular Sri Lankan pop singer.

In 2000 she and her husband were brutally assaulted by the Presidential Security Division (PSD) of President Chandrika Kumaratunga and threatened with death if they attended protests against the government. The incident led to an outcry by Dharmasiri Bankdaranayake who was later also subject to threats of death. In the aftermath of these events, Artists Against Violence (AAV) was formed. Ten members of the PSD were detained for the violence and sentenced to sentenced to jail in 2013, however Rookantha the husband of her and Chandralekha each handed in an open letter to Mahinda Rajapaksa.asking for pardon from the perpetrators as they have decided to forgive them, especially since the PSD officers who were detained were mere employees of the former president, and retribution for innocent people was not their goal.

Perera was married to Rookantha Goonatillake in 1989 and has three daughters as well as an infant son. Two children came from her previous marriage, daughter Shyami Nadisha and son Yohan Perera. There are two children, Rookantha, Raini Charuka and Windy.

Perera was born into an upper-middle class household in Kurunegala. As a child , she frequently sang in the family. In school, she often sang and was able to participate in school competitions intercollegiately. When she was studying, she sang with the group “Spring Time” in Kurunegala. She got married to her husband Rookantha Goonatillake back in 1976 while they were keyboard players for the group.

Perera caught the attention of film producer and director D. B. Nihalsinghe as he was a reporter on NYSC. She was chosen to play in his new TV series Rekha which turned her into a celebrity. She received the award for the best TV actress of the year 1986 (for Nadee Geethaya, another series created by Nihalsinghe) and also the award for the best playback singer that identical time (for her role in Yali Hamuwennai). She was signed by LUX International by Lever Brothers at the time.
