The 22nd of February, 2006 she was the surprise gold medalist in the cross- country women’s 1.1 km (0.7 mile) sprint in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. The video of her was shared across the Internet when the singer was singing “O Canada”, the Canadian national anthem from the podium of medals. The CBC’s then-commentator Brian Willams said of the ceremony: “If you’re ever standing on top of the podium, this is how you sing our national anthem.”
She took home the first World Cup gold medal in her hometown in Canmore the month of January, in the sprint competition and then a second gold medal in Lahti, Finland, in March of 2008. She ended in the 2009 World Cup season ranked seventh in the sprint event and 23rd overall.
