Caplin was the subject of a scandal known as “Cheriegate”, in which she was implicated with Peter Foster, an Australian criminal who helped Cherie Blair’s husband in the purchase of two flats at Bristol. Cherie Blair attempted to distance herself from Foster, and briefed 10 Downing Street’s press office to make a public statement that Foster wasn’t involved in the deal. Foster presented evidence to prove that she had lied and she caught her. After apologizing publicly, she read a prepared statement in which she blamed her “misfortunes” on the pressures of being a mother and running a family. Although she tried to distance her self from Foster, it was revealed later that she and Tony Blair had agreed as godparents to Carole Caplin’s yet-to be born child (Caplin later miscarried).

In 2010 Caplin started libel proceedings against the Daily Mail for a newspaper article that suggested that Caplin might have been considering selling the story of her time with the Blairs and to “blow the lid on Tony and Cherie Blair’s sex secrets”. It was announced on 1 November 2011 that Caplin has accepted “substantial” damages from the newspaper for the false claims the Mail had made.

In 1981, she was in a relationship with Adam Ant. They met again in 1983. Ant reported that Caplin attempted to recruit Ant to Exegesis. They had more contact in 1995.
