Carmen Velasquez was awarded the Outstanding Public Service Award in 2011 by U.S. Joseph Crowley, Congressman. Since 2003, she has received numerous recognitions from both the Ecuadorian government and organizations from other Latin American nations. Velasquez also received citations by Michael DenDekker (New York State Assemblyman), Jose Peralta (New York 13th District Representative), Assemblyman Francisco Moya, Assemblyman Francisco Moya, and Julissa Fereras (New York City Council Member); and Brian Stack (State Senator in 2014), Linda Machado in 2012 from the Assembly of Ecuador, Congressman Joseph Crowley (2011), and Peter Vallone Jr., New York City Council member. Carmen Velasquez is a tireless advocate for the protection and advancement of civil rights for immigrant communities throughout her career.
Starting January 2016 Velasquez served at the Queens General Courthouse in Jamaica, Queens.
Velasquez is also an Founding Member and Past President of the Latino Lawyers Association of Queens County. It was established in 1997. She is also Past President of New York’s Hispanic National Bar Association. She was also the founder of the Spanish American Club at Long Island City Highschool. She is currently an advisor to this organization.

Carmen R. Velasquez, /’ka.rmen.ve’la.skez/ was born May 30, 1960. She is a Supreme Court Justice and has been serving the 11th District of New York State since January 2015. Prior to her election, she was also a judge at the New York City Civil Court of Queens County. Velasquez was the first Ecuadorian judge to be appointed to the Civil Court and Supreme Court of the State of New York.
Velasquez served as an assistant district attorney in the District Office of Bronx County between 1987 and 1988. Later, she worked as an Assistant Department Advocate in the District Office of Bronx County and as a Deputy Department Advocate between 1989 and 1991 at the New York Department of Sanitation. She was in private practice in Queens from 1991 to 2008. She was an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice from 2000 to 2002. She was elected to a 10-year term in November 2008 as a Civil Court Judge in the State of New York. She served until 2014.
Velasquez ran for election to the Supreme Court, 11th District during 2014. She competed with 8 other candidates for the 4 available seats during the general election on November 4, earning a seat with 14.3% of the votes. In January 2015, she began serving as Justice at the Long Island Courthouse, in Queens County, for a 14-year term, ending on December 2028. The election resulted in her being the first Ecuadorian to be elected by general vote and to obtain the title of Justice in the State of New York.
